Don’t know what to do with your life?

Do you have no idea about what you want to do with your career?
Are you the one who’s confused and trying to figure out what you need to do in your life?
Do you have a hard time figuring out your passion?

Until a few months back, I was in the same position; a guy just graduated from college having no idea what needs to be done with his career. I graduated in physics but I didn’t wish to pursue a career in physics. My interests and mindsets began to change and I felt like more of a business oriented person. Having this change of mindset with no prior business knowledge or experience, I felt like I was lost in my life. I had no idea what about I will be doing in my future, knowing just that I didn’t want to continue in physics.

Soon, I realised a subtle meaning in this situation-

If you can’t find out what you want to do in your life, find out what you don’t want to do in your life!

If you don’t know what is your passion, then you simply haven’t tried enough things yet. This can be best understood by what Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban says:

I realised this and I started trying out different things in my life. During the process, I learnt many skills and tried to learn more about different career options. To name a few, I learnt about the stock market, real estate, programming, sales, digital marketing, copywriting, advertising, etc. Eventually, I started figuring out what I DON’T want to do in my life. I began striking off the things I couldn’t imagine myself doing for the next 20 years of my life.

Now, I am not saying that I have found the purpose of my life, or that I am clear about my future. It’s just that I am not beating myself up for not knowing what I want to do in my life. I am figuring out slowly, trying out different things, one thing at a time. And also, someday when I start my own business, all these valuable skills will be immensely helpful. I know that whatever I am learning today would definitely be useful someday in the future.

So here’s my advice for you if you find yourself in a similar situation in which I was a few months back-

  1. Don’t beat yourself up
It’s okay to not know what you want to do in your life. You are not alone, almost everyone is in a similar situation.

  2. Keep learning and trying out new things
Keep exploring different things. Do courses, read books, do internships. These things will not only help you gain clarity but will also help you build a strong CV.
  3. Have patience
Give yourself time. It will take time, but believe me, you will figure out soon. And make sure you enjoy the process of exploring.
  4. Trust that someday it will all make sense
Have a belief that everything that you’re doing won’t get wasted. All the things will fall into place in the end.
  5. Keep hustling
Keep on doing things, doesn’t matter what. Read books, go for volunteering, go to seminars and events, etc. Just don’t sit idle.

To sum it all, have patience and keep trying new things. Enjoy the process. If you keep moving with this mindset, I promise that one day you will definitely succeed. Till then, keep hustling and enjoy the process! 🙂
